My work centers around the visual representation of the spatial, and in particular the relationship between modernist architecture (spatial) and flat, formal space of the print (visual). Im interested in the modernist architecture, and the modern art gallery in particular, as both a space that contains art, and as a space that can inspire art. My ambivalent feelings towards the white box of the gallery, and the alienation and allure of these spaces comes across in my formal choices, particularly through my use of muted colors. The planes of the blank wall, and the play of light and shadow in empty spaces provide me with the basic forms of my prints, which lie between representation and modernist abstraction. I like printmaking because the convention of the suite allows for image variation and series, for a multiplied experience of a space rather than a singular one. And once the prints are hung, I am intrigued by the relationship between the print, the impression created by the plate, the wall, and the image of the wall, which in my work is often represented by another piece of paper through chine colle. What does the wall become then, absence or presence; paper or hole? In my practice, printmaking gives me a set of restraints that mimic the restraints that architecture places on our experiences, and on artmaking itself.
